CHAPTER 10

The smile hadn’t left my face for the past week. I’d earned Hunter’s trust after healing Sadie and he’d visited me each day and brought me a sample of the shifter-vampire’s blood to test. Witches were naturally gifted in elemental and healing magics, but I wasn’t sure I could bring the animal back.

Only those with necromancer skills could bring the dead back, and that had serious restrictions. A skill more common to warlocks than witches. Only those practitioners that had turned completely dark practiced necromancy because what returned was less than human.

Souls could not be brought back, so those resurrected had no moral compass to guide their actions. They didn’t cleave to their previous relationships and didn’t care about their old lives. The human soul that made them unique in the world was gone.

Scanning the page in front of me, I made a note to try to combine ginger with the basic restoration potion I had created to heal Sadie. I looked through the ingredients I documented for that potion in my grimoire and decided to add eye of newt as well for extra clarity.

I ran my finger down the page and thought about adding my ability to create hellfire. That wouldn’t be a good idea because if anyone discovered that fact, I would be ostracized. Caton would start the revolt because he’d be jealous. It wasn’t a skill he’d mastered yet, as it took an extremely powerful practitioner. I wondered why my magic had evolved so quickly since my divorce. I’d always had powerful magic, but the strength behind the Hellfire pyre I'd made for the demon dead had surprised me.

And it was something I shouldn't be able to do. Warlocks tended toward the darker side of magic. Not that they were necessarily malevolent. They walked a thin line between corruption and staying on the side of the light. Warlocks were far more likely to turn to the dark side of magic than witches.

Before I faced those demons, warlocks were the only ones that could conjure hellfire. Knowing how people felt about hybrid creatures, they would not be pleased with my new acquisition. My store was barely off the ground. This information could destroy that hard-earned progress.

The chime of the bell above the door made me close my grimoire before I looked up to greet my customer. “Oh hey, Greyson. Does Victoria need more potions?”

My stomach plummeted to my feet. My heart followed right behind that when I caught sight of Greyson’s red-rimmed eyes. That did not bode well. I hurried around the counter and met him in the middle of the main aisle.

“No, she won’t be needing anything else.” His words ended with a sob and my heart cracked in half. The warlock didn’t need to tell me that Victoria died. It was evident in the despair I felt emanating from him.

I wrapped my arms around him and held him tight. “I am so sorry, Greyson. When did it happen?”

“Last night. Her heart couldn’t take the strain anymore.
